SPM awarded for “Buildings That Can Really Talk”
SPM Instrument UK participated together with its customer Centrica Group Property Team at the annual industry British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) Gala awards at Grosvenor House on October 16th.
The Centrica Group Property Team had entered one award category, titled Innovation, and was confirmed as finalists in July along with the formidable opposition of Johnson Controls, Microsoft and GSK. The submission, titled Buildings That Can Really Talk, highlighted three years of consistent development for the team, and the development and implementation of a Conditioned Based Monitoring system.
The solution based on an online system from SPM Instrument has already been implemented in 15 Centrica call-centre buildings, saving over a million GBP per year. SPM provides online condition monitoring equipment for rotating machinery, presenting up-to-date condition infor-mation to the maintenance organization via an Internet platform. The condition based mainte-nance approach enables Centrica to optimise the use of personnel and other resources, in-creasing reliability and drastically reducing costs. SPM Maintenance UK, through MD Nigel McElvenny, played a key role in developing the winning system.
The judges, under the watch of 1800 guests from the entire industry sector, awarded the Group Property submission first place in the Innovation category.
The judges acknowledged that the technology represented a landmark step change for the FM industry, that will see the traditional approach in the way buildings are maintained, oper-ated and controlled, alter dramatically. Buildings of the future really will “talk back” and be equipped with the capacity to deliver greater efficiency and reliability and offer reduced oper-ating costs.
Nigel McElvenny commented: “This has been the culmination of three years of development, investment and hard work. Earlier this year, the system was Highly Commended at the Build-ing Services Awards 2006. This and the acknowledgement tonight is fully justified. It is clear that through this project we have been able to develop Centrica into the industry leader in building operation.”.
