Digitalization with Airius wireless vibration sensors at Södra Cell

As part of a Group-level digitalization initiative, Södra Cell evaluated how vibration monitoring could support increased production. The collaboration with SPM Instrument resulted in the Airius LTE-M wireless vibration sensor, designed to enhance OEE and support higher tonnage.

Application and monitoring setup

The condition monitoring solution is based on the Airius LTE-M wireless vibration sensor with 4G (5G) communication. It enables more frequent vibration measurements on motors, pumps, and fans compared with route-based manual measurements.

Results and benefits

With 1,000 installed sensors, Södra Cell increased production by approximately 4,800 tons in the first year. The solution provides increased prewarning times for machine faults, helps avoid unplanned production stops, reduces maintenance effort, and lowers Total Cost of Ownership by minimizing manual measurement and enabling more efficient maintenance.
