Björkdal Gold Mine in northern Sweden uses SPM Instrument’s toe position monitoring as a process optimization tool for gold ore grinding. By improving control of the tumbling mill process, the operation can increase throughput and support a stable particle size that is important for downstream enrichment.
Different ore types at Björkdal vary in hardness, which affects the time required to reach the required specification and influences throughput and particle size. With toe position monitoring on the ball mill, operators can adjust parameters such as water flow, ore inlet, and ball volume to optimize operation and avoid overload or pooling.
Since introducing the toe position monitoring system, Björkdal has increased production by about 10%. The solution helps maximize throughput, maintain the desired grind size, and monitor toe movement in relation to liner wear, thereby supporting higher gold yields and more efficient electricity use.
