Lubrication issue on a felt guide roll detected with SPM LR/HR

This case study outlines the use of SPM LR/HR technology to monitor and extend the life of a felt guiding roll bearing in a paper machine's drying section. Condition data was collected through route-based measurements for over fourteen years, starting in 2008. Regular analysis with SPM LR/HR and SPM Spectrum allowed early detection of poor lubrication, leading to recommendations for re-lubrication, which extended bearing life.

Although no damage was detected in FFT spectrums, periodic re-lubrication significantly lowered shock pulse values and prolonged bearing lifespan. In February 2023, a sudden increase in SPM LR/HR values indicated inner race damage, prompting a recommendation to replace the bearing. Visual inspection confirmed this damage.

Overall, the SPM LR/HR technology helped the customer avoid unplanned downtime by providing early warning of lubrication issues and eventual bearing failure, extending bearing life to fourteen years.

Portable instrumentation

Our range of handheld instrumentation includes equipment for shock pulse measurement, vibration severity measurement, and vibration spectrum analysis.

Shock Pulse Method LR/HR

The LR/HR method allows the precision analysis of oil film condition in the interface between the outer and inner races and contains calculation models for finding the optimal lubricant.

Pulp and paper

Condition monitoring is a cornerstone in the asset management of pulp and paper plants. Having control of the operating condition is a must to optimize plant profitability.
